Hi Mike and Mary, my first daughter was born in Providence Hospital in 1971. I remember it fondly. I was born in a little hospital on Kodiak Island in 1951. Thanks for jogging our memories!
Dr Vern Cates told me this story. He was part of the group of physicians that decided they needed an alternative to Providence Hospital. Apparently in the middle of the night, when a patient came into Providence ER, the physician "had to wake an old nun up, wait for her to get dressed and walk down to the ER to open the drug cabinet. We were unsuccessful in securing our own key to respond to the patients in a timely manner so we opened our own hospital. That was just one example" His son, Dr J.C. Cates is still in practice and probably has many more of his father's stories regarding opening up a second hospital.

Enjoyed this history. Our daughter was born at Humana in 1989. We had to fly in from Bethel as she was overdue by two weeks.
Michael – Your daughter has an interesting story to tell about her birth. Our best to her. And Mary and I are glad you are enjoying all the history.
